Christi Smither
Senior Onboard Supervisor,
Clipper Vacations
Christi Smither loves people and loves being on the water, which makes her post at Clipper Vacations a dream job. Actually, after 20 years with the Northwest’s largest tour operator, it’s a dream career.
Last year, Victoria Clipper changed its name to Clipper Vacations. How does the new name reflect the growth and changes in your business?
People think of us as a boat, but over time we’ve developed business relationships throughout Washington, British Columbia and the western Rockies. We book hotels, tours and we have our own excursions out of Seattle. We sell Space Needle, Seattle Art Museum and Experience Music Project tickets. Also, Argosy cruise tickets in the summer, the Savor Seattle Food Tour, Teatro ZinZanni and many other attractions. We really sell the destination.
How long have you worked for Clipper Vacations?
20 years. I started as an attendant and worked in the gift shop that first summer. Then I became a tour rep. I was promoted to supervisor of onboard service in 1995. I’ve worn many hats at the Clipper — I’ve even filled in as naturalist for whale watching tours. Now I’m a full-time supervisor. I’m the liaison between the office and the boat.
What do you like about your job?
The people! What’s neat about my job is that everyone’s on vacation. Most of our passengers are visiting Seattle and taking a side trip. We also get groups from Japan, Australia and all over the world. People are getting away to relax and I’m helping them have the best vacation they can have — selling tours and giving directions. And I love taking pictures for people.
How about convention attendees?
If the convention center is doing well, so is the Clipper. It’s all connected. We know when there’s a big convention in town. Our boats are full. I love that I’m a part of that economy.
Why does tourism matter for Seattle and the Pacific Northwest?
When visitors are spending money, that’s tax revenue and that helps the entire state. That helps schools, roads, construction projects.
Why does tourism matter to you?
My job is perfect for me. I love people and I love working on the water. The smell of salt water makes happy. And I love the fact that I promote a place I love to live in. Tourism has enabled me to have the kind of life I wanted to have.
